Rather than be sad summer is over, come and and celebrate the fun with Bye, Summer! This happy gnome is getting in one (or maybe more) trip to the pool where he’s relaxing on his favorite flamingo float with a cool drink in his hand.
For this project, you’ll receive a step-by-step instruction sheet along with the design and lettering so all you have to do is trace it onto the paper and you’re ready to paint. We’ll be spending some time on what pigments make the best skin-tones as well as creating water reflections.
The art utilizes pure color in the flamingo and the gnome’s hat, shorts and snorkel gear. What does this mean? It means that rather than shading with an analogous palette or with a staining color, all the shading is created through values of each pigment. For this reason, I do recommend you have a good yellow, yellow-green, pink and bright blue pigment to help you achieve these gorgeous, juicy colors too!
Other important things to know:
Do I Have To Know How To Draw?
No, you do not. You will be provided with step-by-step instructions along with the design and lettering to trace onto your paper.
Do I Need To Know How To Paint?
You do need some experience with watercolors, washes, etc. to successfully take this class, but beginners with adventurous and courageous attitudes are always most welcome!
Do I Have To Have Your Exact Supply List?
No, you don’t. I encourage you to use what you already have with the exception of specific requirements. Your results will vary from mine regardlesss of whether you’re using the exact same pigments as we all paint differently.
When Will Class Be Held?
Class will be held live and online on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. EDST and will last approximately two hours (but probably longer as I will try to answer as many questions as I can).
Can I Access The Class Later?
Yes! The class will be recorded and posted to TheImaginaryRealm.com. Once the class has been uploaded, you will receive an email to let you know where and how to access the video and handout.
How Long Will I Have The Materials?
You will have the class instructions handout (in pdf form) forever as it can be downloaded and you will have access to all the class videos for one year from September 9, 2021 or the date you sign up after September 9, 2021.
Can I Get A Refund For This Class?
Unfortunately, that’s not possible once access to the class materials has been given.

Recommended Supply List
8” x 10” piece of watercolor paper (https://amzn.to/2Pe6P4w), cold press OR a 5″ x 7” card appropriate for watercolor (https://amzn.to/2XGEQM8)
#2 Pencil or mechanical pencil
White Eraser
Kneaded Eraser
#4 or 6 round brush (https://amzn.to/39fMgu5) OR a large waterbrush
Watercolors I used – Daniel Smith Hansa Yellow Medium (https://amzn.to/3iJAQTf); Isoindoline Yellow (https://amzn.to/2TvNbQk); Pyrrol Orange (https://amzn.to/3tshw2b); Quinacridone Rose (https://amzn.to/3vshDfI); Phthalo Blue, Red Shade (https://amzn.to/3tlx0F0); Phthalo Yellow Green (https://amzn.to/33Tiw3Z); and Burnt Umber (https://amzn.to/2DPOqFH).
You will also need a “black” watercolor. M. Graham’s Neutral Tint (https://amzn.to/3craPpv) is my preferred black watercolor. I prefer this neutral tint over a true black pigment or other neutral tints because the mix is made from green and violet pigments that mixes well with other pigments without deadening or dulling them.
IMPORTANT: If you do not have these pigments and want to substitute, I highly recommend you test the yellows and pinks you have on a scrap of paper to make sure you will like the color. Some of the yellows I tried were dull and boring.
Facial Tissues
Clean scrap paper (to rest your hand on)
Black Waterproof Markers – I used a set of Micron Pigma pens in sizes .1 or .3 (https://amzn.to/34v1dba) – This is a set of six pens as it is more economical to purchase the set than individual markers.
Paper Towels
White Uni•Ball Signo* gel pen (https://amzn.to/3fOI8Ea) or other white gel pen
Optional Supplies
Graphite transfer paper (https://amzn.to/2WCYVCq) – If you purchase transfer paper, please make sure it is Wax Free). See further comments below.
Flat watercolor brush, size 1/2 inch (https://amzn.to/3j2cdUt) OR a flat waterbrush (https://amzn.to/382GAnM)- Flat brushes are ideal for the water reflections!
Blow dryer
Transfer Papers
If you purchase graphite transfer paper please be sure it is Wax Free.
To transfer your project without graphite transfer paper, you can use a window or light box. You can also scribble graphite on the back of the paper to transfer the design.
