Sometimes, simple is best! I simply adore this heart trees. Adding a few special touches of gold for sparkle along with some stripes and polka dots, and they launch into the fabulous category. The best thing about them though, is that they are simple to create and make a wonderful card to send to someone during the holidays!
To add a little more panache to the card, the star and heart are hand-embossed to give it a little more dimension! This is strictly optional, but lots and lots of fun!
Both trees were painted with the same base colors…but look how the gold brings out the yellows and the tree with green stripes and dots brings is much more blue.
This class focuses on adding texture through lines and dots, changing values through texture and using touches of gold to add elegance and fun!
It’s your choice of creating a tree with a heart topper or the one with a star (you will receive both patterns)…or mix it up and create your own!
This class will be hosted on the Zoom platform with an opportunity for you to ask questions in real time. Zoom is a free tool and you only need your computer to access it. You may need to download the Zoom app to get the most out of the tool.
Once you are registered, I will send out information on your prepwork and what steps you will need to complete ahead of time to be ready for class!

Recommended Supply List
A piece of cold press watercolor paper, 140 lb. paper, cut to 3.25 x 6.25^ inches – This project can be created larger or smaller depending on how you want to use it and it is also appropriate for a sketchbook page. ^To create a postcard, the paper should be 3.25 w x 6.25 t inches. ^For a folded card, the paper should be 6.5 w x 6.25 t inches.
Graphite pencil
White Eraser or SumoGrip* Eraser (https://amzn.to/3fJRgcY) – It’s black but don’t let that fool you!
Watercolors I used: (All are Daniel Smith): Cobalt Teal Blue (https://amzn.to/2PB3rNR), Sap Green (https://amzn.to/3ovFk3f), Perylene Green (https://amzn.to/3mPCK6E), Perylene Red (https://amzn.to/31QmDNb); and Burnt Umber (https://amzn.to/3kZ1dpG).
Watercolor brush with a sharp point, Size 6 or 8 (https://amzn.to/2WD34WR) – If your brush does not come to a sharp point, I highly recommend having a second, smaller brush, Size 1 or 2, with a sharp point.
Extra-fine tipped gold paint marker (https://amzn.to/3kYlUlB) – this is a set of gold, silver and white extra-fine tipped markers. They are recommended over individual markers due to price.
Kuretake Gansai Tambi with 6 Starry Colors (https://amzn.to/3ipuWWS) or another gold watercolor. There are a number of other metallic sets available including the Coliro, formerly FineTec set (https://amzn.to/2XPUK6J), the Dainayw Metallic Watercolor set with 8 colors (https://amzn.to/2PFKVEb) and the Komorebi Watercolor Set (https://amzn.to/2PInkCH). While there are a few variations in colors and the number of colors, these one set seems to perform much like the others. All of these are highly pigmented.
Paper towels, tissues, and two water containers
Optional Supplies
Graphite transfer paper (https://amzn.to/2WCYVCq) – If you purchase transfer paper, make sure it is Wax Free)
Corner Trimmer (https://amzn.to/3jWcSEj) – I have been asked several times where I found watercolor paper cards in the size I’ve used for this project because of the rounded corners. The cards are cut down from a larger piece of watercolor paper and then I trim the corners with a corner trimmer. The Crop-A-Dile is the only corner trimmer I have found that can trim thicker papers, like watercolor paper, reliably and without tearing.
White Coin Envelopes (https://amzn.to/3l035OK) – The size of this project is determined by the size of these coin envelopes. The come in a host of colors, but I really like the white ones because they allow for more creative decorating!
Ball Stylus (https://amzn.to/3l1Ug76) – For embossing the star or heart. You will need a large tip and a small tip. This set has five different tools with a total of ten tips.
Thick Craft Foam, 6 mm or .25 inches – You only need a piece slightly larger than the shape you’re embossing. While color isn’t important, I do tend to use white so that I don’t accidentally transfer any color. These sheets are usually available in the kids’ section at large craft stores.
One piece of cardstock in a coordinating color (red or green) cut to fit the back of the card or postcard you have created. The size would be 3 x 6 inches for the postcard and 6.25 x 6 inches for the folded card.
Acid-free Glue (https://amzn.to/388vG0Z)
Kneaded eraser
Blow dryer
White Uni•Ball Signo* gel pen (https://amzn.to/3fOI8Ea) or other white gel pen – For touch ups
Transfer Papers
If you purchase graphite transfer paper please be sure it is Wax Free.
To transfer your project without graphite transfer paper, you can use a window or light box. You can also scribble graphite on the back of the paper to transfer the design.
